City of London

New Year’s Eve: Celebrate in London

Watch from the river

On New Year’s Eve the Thames is adorned with dozens of glittering cruise boats, all with a great view of the fireworks. Or, if you fancy the James Bond experience, you could always go for a speedboat.

Watch from on high

Head for the hills with your cosiest coat and a flask of boozy hot chocolate. We think the best views are from Alexandra Palace, Primrose Hill, and Parliament Hill or Hampstead Heath.

Watch from your apartment

Of course, there’s no view in town that can compete with HD cameras on helicopters. So, pop a bottle of bubbly, snuggle on the sofa or even have a little soirée of your own – just don’t forget to turn on BBC One at five to midnight.

Cool and quirky New Year’s Eves

If you’re staying at one of our City aparthotels…

Party like it’s 1399 at the Ivory Vaults, where you’ll enjoy a six-course Medieval banquet. Order a mead or two from your serving wench as you watch knights, jesters, dancers and acrobats perform in your honour. You’re only a short stumble from one of our short stay apartments on Fenchurch Street.

If you’re staying at Native Bankside…

Party with RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Raja at the gorgeous LaLiT Ballroom for the party of the decade. Expect an utterly debauched “eleganza extravaganza”, with great music, bubbly and a four-course Pan-Indian dinner. Here you’re only an 18 minute walk back to bed at our hotel near Southbank, Native Bankside.

The largest of London’s Royal Parks, it connects some of the city’s best loved areas. There’s Bayswater to the north, Mayfair to the east and Knightsbridge to the south, to name but a few. The park itself is a heavenly expanse of history within calm green space, with a lake you can swim in, sculptures, water features and a gallery. There’s also the Serpentine Pavilion – a stunning temporary structure designed by a different, carefully selected, artist each year. All just a ten minute walk from Oxford Street.

The City is delightfully contradictory. It’s where old meets new, formal meets quirky and quintessential Britishness meets the global economy. Gone are the bowler hats and bumbershoots, but that big business energy still pervades the whole district, bringing a celebratory vibe to the restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs where the suited and booted go to toast the end of the workday.

Dotted with pretty parks, antique shops, cafés and crafts, Fulham has a creative countryside vibe even in the heart of London’s Zone 2. The beautiful Fulham Palace is well worth a visit, as are any of the brilliant gastro pubs, while culture vultures will flock to the London Theatre Workshop and the Grapefruit Gallery.

The history of Monument and its neighbourhood

There was no fire service at the time, so Londoners took it upon themselves to extinguish the flames over four days and nights, with only buckets of water to hand. The fire consumed over 13,000 houses, the old St Paul’s Cathedral, 87 churches, the Guildhall, the Royal Exchange, 52 livery company halls and four stone bridges. In fact, it was said that the heat from the fire was so great that the lead roof on St Paul’s Cathedral melted and flowed down the streets.

Miraculously, only five people are known to have died in the Great Fire, and some of the City’s most beautiful architecture was born out of the 50-year rebuilding effort, led by Sir Christopher Wren. The Monument, one of Wren’s creations, is great for getting a panoramic view of your City surroundings, so be sure to pay a visit and take a photo or two from the viewing platform.

While you’re just moments from The Monument, you’re also just a three minute stroll from one of the City’s best loved (and least known) historical hideaways – St Dunstan in the East church garden. The Church of St Dunstan was originally built around 1100 and is a Grade I listed building. It was named for St Dunstan, a tenth century monk who reportedly survived black magic and leprosy to become Archbishop of Canterbury.

The building partially survived The Great Fire but was severely damaged again in the Blitz bombings of 1941. Today it’s a public garden, with trees growing through windows and vines winding their way around arched doorways and crumbling walls, making a gorgeously green haven from the bustle of the City. Here you’ll find suited and booted workers escaping office life alongside art students sketching the beauty around them. It’s the ideal spot for a picnic, a lunch break with a book or a breather from a day’s sightseeing.

This city hotspot at The Ned boasts no fewer than ten restaurants. Our favourite brunch here is at Millie’s Lounge – particularly the ham hock hash with a luscious Clarence Court egg on top – but any of the eateries here will have you feeling deservedly spoilt.

The Ritz

Breakfast at the Ritz is just as decadent as its famous afternoon tea. It’s served in the hotel’s opulent Michelin-starred restaurant, with an indulgent Continental buffet, cooked specialities to order and even a spot of caviar, if you really want to get into a special someone’s good books.

The Wolseley

Breakfast at the Wolseley is such an institution that A.A. Gill wrote a book about it. Surrounded by spectacular Art Deco design, you’ll enjoy exquisite Viennoiserie, smoked kippers, devilled kidneys and a fine selection of Austrian coffees.

Mayfair’s quirkiest restaurant, Sketch, takes brunch to another level. Served in The Glade, its ‘evergreen enchanted forest’, treat yourself to the French Toast Suzette and poached tempura eggs.

This fabled New York bakery’s only London outpost is most famous for its Cronut®, but breakfast in its little flowered conservatory is the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion. We like to start with a spicy chorizo croissant, followed by a pistachio and rose bostock.

Rail House

Rail House takes brunch very seriously, with quirky takes on classic dishes – their signature Burgerdict, to name just one – as well as healthy and delicious items for the more calorie-conscious mama. Don’t miss the house-blended juices in particular.

What better way to mark the day than by shopping and brunching at the Queen’s favourite department store? Breakfast at Fortnum & Mason is an elegant affair, with a variety of rarebits, indulgent duck egg dishes, and French toast with roasted plums for those with a sweet tooth.

If you are a horticulturist, or aspire to be, you can easily garner new ideas from seeing how plants of more than two thousand species are laid out to form what looks like a rainforest beneath the large glass roof. They do say plants are good for the office!

Libreria

After Rohan Silva quit as an entrepreneurial advisor to Downing Street in 2013, he opened this bookshop in East London. This attraction encompasses everything that makes a bookshop a bookshop, free of the distractions of loud coffee machines and Wi-Fi induced noises.

Here, books are arranged in suggestive themes rather than standard categories, allowing your trail of thought to run into many unexpected places. Come here to escape.

This boutique in Shoreditch flung open its doors in 2015 and specialises in stocking luxury goods, including clothes from such brands as RE/DONE, Rejina Pyo and Alighieri. However, the building also houses a chic cafe where you can sip hot and cold beverages while admiring one of London’s coolest concept stores. It’s also a great place to stop for brunch.

Cartoon Museum

This Bloomsbury museum is surely among the most unjustly hidden places in London. It includes British cartoons and comic art from various periods, right back to the eighteenth century.

Not only can you browse the three main galleries but you should also keep an eye on the line up of events and workshops, so you experience something new every time.

Tate Modern London

If your creative tastes lean towards visual art of a contemporary slant, you could regularly find new sources of inspiration in the Tate Modern, which is among the most creative places in London.

The Tate recently opened a Switch House extension where you can check out solo displays from female artists and take to a viewing platform allowing panoramic views of the city. The Tate is in Southwark’s Bankside area, in what was the building of Bankside Power Station.

So there you have it, don’t settle for working from home or in one of those mundane co-working spaces. Get out there and try somewhere new!
