Borough & Southbank

Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG)

Our main priority is the sustainability and environmental longevity of each building. That’s why we’re working towards BREEAM accreditation for all of our aparthotels. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for buildings and certifies them after assessing their environmental, social and economic sustainability performance. Our Bankside property already has an ‘Excellent’ rating and is the only aparthotel in the UK to have a BREEAM rating. We’re working towards the same for our others.

As a company, we’re always evolving, and our properties evolve with us. When we refurbish a building, anything we can’t repurpose is donated to Chunky Monkey, to be recycled into new furniture. Energy efficiency is paramount, so we install glazed windows, sensor lighting and electricity supply that’s key card activated, so it’s not on all the time. When it comes to décor, our designers often opt for recycled furniture, using bespoke vintage pieces sourced locally and from flea markets.

As for our new furniture, we make sure we use suppliers who share our eco-friendly, community-minded ethos. Brands like Hypnos, Conran, Thurstan, Well Done Group and L&S Signage, are striving for carbon neutrality, using renewable natural resources that create long-lasting products which reduce waste and landfill.

We’re also working with local charities in all our locations. For example, we’ve teamed up with the Michael Carrick Foundation and Room to Reward in Manchester, helping to develop opportunities for children and reward some of the city’s top charity volunteers.

Our suppliers

Wherever we can, we choose local, because one of the best ways we can cut our carbon footprint is by reducing transportation of the products we need. We’re also keen to support local, independent businesses that, in turn, invest in their communities and boost the surrounding economy.

In Bankside, we stock our pantries with items from Borough Market and have our coffee roasted at the Gentleman Baristas, just two streets away. In Manchester, we get our brews from locals Ancoats Coffee and Bohea Tea. In Glasgow, we get them from Thomsons.

We work with suppliers that are sustainably minded and eco-friendly. In our English properties. Bramley provides refillable, full sized products for our apartments, using the most natural ingredients available, and bottles made of sugar cane instead of plastic. You’ll find Bramley’s biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes at Native Manchester and we use cruelty-free, toxin-free Innuscience cleaning products to care for your health, reduce pollution and stay eco-friendly.

Our apartments

We’ve found some really innovative ways to boost the sustainability of our apartments, and we’re always excited to trial new ideas. Like using Mitre Eco filling in our pillows, made from recycled plastic bottles, and recycled carpets with underlay made from old plastic.

We use biodegradable Nespresso capsules in Native Manchester – we’re rolling them out across all our aparthotels – and we also use energy A-rated appliances in all our new builds, reducing the pressure we put on the environment by cutting energy consumption.

We’re all about reducing our carbon footprint, as well as encouraging our guests to do so. It’s our mission to get people to love our neighbourhoods as much as we do, so we tell them about all the big sights and hidden gems within walking distance, getting them to reduce their carbon footprint by travelling on foot.

Our people

As for the heart and soul of Native, it’s all in our people. Our colleagues’ health and wellbeing is where it all begins.

That’s why we work with Hospitality Action, which offers mental health support to people who work in the hospitality industry. We also have a brilliant Cycle Scheme to get everyone biking to work, and there’s plenty more to come. After all, we’re worth it.

How to spend Valentine’s weekend in London

Rotherhithe’s famous Brunel Museum plays host to Midnight Apothecary, a rooftop cocktail garden atop the Grand Entrance Hall of Brunel’s engineering masterpiece, the Thames Tunnel. Their Valentine’s Night promises exquisite midwinter cocktails (including hot toddies to keep the chill out), great food, live music and a fire to toast your beloved the perfect marshmallow.

Wild West take your fancy? Take someone you fancy to the Moonshine Saloon in East London. The town tailor will dress you on arrival and you can try your hand at a game of cards or dice while avoiding the suspicion of the local sheriff. Book your seat, bring a bottle and settle in for a night of power play, moonshine and illicit cocktail drinking.

The refined and romantic

If the weather’s on your side, make your way to Hyde Park for a leisurely stroll by the Serpentine. Wander from sculpture to sculpture, fountain to fountain and stop by one of the cafes for a coffee to walk with before settling down to lunch at nearby Angelus, Sketch or Gymkhana.

If an elegant yet cosy bar is more your style, try Wun’s Tea Room at Bun House in Soho. You’ll be surrounded by deep red drapes and soft lighting – all said to be inspired by Wong Kar-wai’s In The Mood for Love – and plied with cocktails made with China’s national spirit, bajjiu.

For something a little different, take your loved one to Kew Gardens’ Orchids: After Hours to enjoy cocktails and Indonesian food and drink it its legendary hothouse. There’ll also be traditional Indonesian dancing, a cooking demonstration and hundreds of exquisite blooms all around you.

New Year’s Eve: Celebrate in London

Watch from the river

On New Year’s Eve the Thames is adorned with dozens of glittering cruise boats, all with a great view of the fireworks. Or, if you fancy the James Bond experience, you could always go for a speedboat.

Watch from on high

Head for the hills with your cosiest coat and a flask of boozy hot chocolate. We think the best views are from Alexandra Palace, Primrose Hill, and Parliament Hill or Hampstead Heath.

Watch from your apartment

Of course, there’s no view in town that can compete with HD cameras on helicopters. So, pop a bottle of bubbly, snuggle on the sofa or even have a little soirée of your own – just don’t forget to turn on BBC One at five to midnight.

Cool and quirky New Year’s Eves

If you’re staying at one of our City aparthotels…

Party like it’s 1399 at the Ivory Vaults, where you’ll enjoy a six-course Medieval banquet. Order a mead or two from your serving wench as you watch knights, jesters, dancers and acrobats perform in your honour. You’re only a short stumble from one of our short stay apartments on Fenchurch Street.

If you’re staying at Native Bankside…

Party with RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Raja at the gorgeous LaLiT Ballroom for the party of the decade. Expect an utterly debauched “eleganza extravaganza”, with great music, bubbly and a four-course Pan-Indian dinner. Here you’re only an 18 minute walk back to bed at our hotel near Southbank, Native Bankside.

Travel well with Chessie King and Native Bankside

Once we’d worked up an appetite, we headed straight to one of Chessie’s top local eateries (and one of our own neighbourhood heroes), Tibits, just a seven minute stroll from Native Bankside. Here we treated ourselves to a lunch of delicious veggie treats and Chessie was happy to answer lots of questions about keeping fit, well and happy in the heart of town.

“If I wake up in the morning and I really just want to get out and run,” she said, “I’ll do exactly that. You can literally just put on your running shoes and just go and explore. That’s my favourite way to exercise when I’m travelling. I think that’s how you find the real gems in London.”

To finish up, Chessie took us back to her Native Bankside apartment and showed us how to make the most of the spacious, comfy rooms with some chilled out yoga, deep stretches and mindfulness. There’s also our lovely fitness suite on the fifth floor, if you fancy a change of scenery while you work up a sweat.

“If I’ve been travelling and if I’ve had a long day,” Chessie said, “I love waking up my body with a flow. Sometimes I do [yoga] just before bed, to stretch out the day. I just take some time to give some love to my body – and then it’ll love me back.”

Recipe: Make some Bala Baya magic in your Native kitchen

Bala Baya’s Fish with Fennel

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 1 whole sea bass, sea bream or red snapper (roughly 800g), preferably left whole on the bone or with the back bone removed
  • 2 red chillies (thinly sliced)
  • 4 cloves of garlic (thinly sliced)
  • Vegetable oil
  • 50ml Arak, Ouzo or Pastis
  • 50ml water
  • 50g butter
  • A bunch of chopped parsley, dill and mint
  • 12 cherry tomatoes
  • 3 sprigs of sage
  • 1 fennel bulb (thinly sliced into shavings)
  • 1 teaspoon of sumac
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 lemon

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 2200C.
  2. Fry the fish in some oil on both sides until golden brown. At the same time, burn the sage over an open flame. If you don’t have a gas hob, fry the sage with the fish.
  3. Put the sage into the belly of the fish.
  4. Transfer the fish to a roasting tray and put it in the preheated oven for 5 minutes.
  5. In the same pan you used to fry the fish, throw in the tomatoes, garlic and chilli and fry until golden brown. Add the alcohol and cook for 30 more seconds.
  6. Add the water, then the butter.
  7. Whisk everything in the pan so the tomatoes are crushed and mixed with the other ingredients, and the butter is emulsified.
  8. Take the pan off the heat and season.
  9. Add 1 tablespoon of the chopped herbs and a squeeze of lemon.
  10. In a separate bowl, mix the fennel shavings with the rest of the herbs and the lemon, then add a dash of olive oil and season.

Plate up and serve

  1. When the fish is tender, remove it from the oven. Make sure it’s cooked by checking the belly – the flesh should be white and not transparent.
  2. Put the fish on a serving plate.
  3. Pour all the sauce in the saucepan over the fish.
  4. Pile the fennel salad on the side.
  5. Sprinkle sumac all over the dish.

And dinner is served. Bon appetit!

Head to Bankside for a taste of Bala Baya.
