Fred’s Bakery on Margaret Street, is the shortest possible walk to a flaky pastry and a proper coffee. Traditional techniques, breads and pastries made to be eaten that morning. It’s one of our Neighbourhood Heroes, so we’re biased. We’re also right.
A little further north on Foley Street, Broken Eggs is another of our Neighbourhood Heroes, with a menu that revolves around the Spanish tortilla. Ideal for a slow brunch over huevos rotos, a low-key lunch, or a date night built around sharing plates and sangria, with a Basque cheesecake worth the trip alone.
Then there’s Attendant on Foley Street, which is a coffee shop in a Victorian gents’ public convenience. Look for the iron railings at street level. The coffee comes from Attendant’s own roastery, so it isn’t trading on the victoriana story alone.

For a quieter hour, the Fitzrovia Chapel sits in Pearson Square, a pedestrianised courtyard off Mortimer Street. While its red-brick exterior appears unremarkable, the inside reveals a stunning vaulted ceiling covered in gilded mosaic that feels worlds away from the busy streets of W1.

Circolo Popolare on Rathbone Place is part restaurant, part spectacle. Colourful, loud, generous Italian plates, desserts built for sharing. The sort of room where a table booked for two hours quietly becomes four. Good for a celebration. Better for a catch-up you don’t want to rush.
For a truly special dining experience, head to Akoko Hero serving innovative West African cuisine. Past that, Charlotte Street and Rathbone Place carry most of the evening trade between them. Fitzrovia has always been stronger on small independent dining rooms than on anything grand.
