How to spend Summer in London

Sunflower salutations

World renowned for its unparalleled collection of rare plants and stunning specimens, Kew also plays host to a varied and fascinating programme of events all year round. This summer there are outdoor theatre shows, art exhibitions and talks, but we’ve got our eyes on the early morning yoga in the iconic Victorian glasshouse known as the Temperate House.

Greet the morning alongside 10,000 rare and endangered plants with a one hour vinyasa flow guided by Anil Jangi, Kew’s own yoga instructor. You’ll beat the crowds (and even most of the staff), so it’s the perfect way to start your day at Kew. Follow it up with a leisurely walk around the grounds, a warming cup of tea in one of the restaurants, or a breakfast picnic on the grass.

Book a mat

Fun at the fair

Sun, sand, street food…who needs to leave London for a proper holiday? London Wonderground is bringing serious summer vibes to Earls Court, with a veritable grown up playground full of outdoor bars, food stalls, fairground rides and a beach, all free to enter and all summer long.

It’s also the new home of Udderbelly, the upside down purple cow that’s become a fixture of the London summer. Here you can see all kinds of fantastic shows, from music and comedy to theatre and puppetry, and this year there’s even a proper big top for the circus.

Street art

We know how much art lovers have missed spending long, leisurely hours gazing on great works in the capital’s galleries while they were closed. Of course, so do the folks at the National Gallery.

That’s why, this summer, they’re putting 20 life-size replicas of the nation’s favourite paintings on display in Trafalgar Square, as part of their Inside Out celebration of art. The works are all taken from the National Gallery’s collection, including paintings by Gainsborough, Caravaggio and Titian, and – best of all – there’ll be a series of free community art sessions. They’re all free and you only have to book the artist-led classes. Otherwise, just rock up with your pencil case and see where the mood takes you.

How to spend Valentine’s weekend in London

Rotherhithe’s famous Brunel Museum plays host to Midnight Apothecary, a rooftop cocktail garden atop the Grand Entrance Hall of Brunel’s engineering masterpiece, the Thames Tunnel. Their Valentine’s Night promises exquisite midwinter cocktails (including hot toddies to keep the chill out), great food, live music and a fire to toast your beloved the perfect marshmallow.

Wild West take your fancy? Take someone you fancy to the Moonshine Saloon in East London. The town tailor will dress you on arrival and you can try your hand at a game of cards or dice while avoiding the suspicion of the local sheriff. Book your seat, bring a bottle and settle in for a night of power play, moonshine and illicit cocktail drinking.

The refined and romantic

If the weather’s on your side, make your way to Hyde Park for a leisurely stroll by the Serpentine. Wander from sculpture to sculpture, fountain to fountain and stop by one of the cafes for a coffee to walk with before settling down to lunch at nearby Angelus, Sketch or Gymkhana.

If an elegant yet cosy bar is more your style, try Wun’s Tea Room at Bun House in Soho. You’ll be surrounded by deep red drapes and soft lighting – all said to be inspired by Wong Kar-wai’s In The Mood for Love – and plied with cocktails made with China’s national spirit, bajjiu.

For something a little different, take your loved one to Kew Gardens’ Orchids: After Hours to enjoy cocktails and Indonesian food and drink it its legendary hothouse. There’ll also be traditional Indonesian dancing, a cooking demonstration and hundreds of exquisite blooms all around you.

New Year’s Eve: Celebrate in London

Watch from the river

On New Year’s Eve the Thames is adorned with dozens of glittering cruise boats, all with a great view of the fireworks. Or, if you fancy the James Bond experience, you could always go for a speedboat.

Watch from on high

Head for the hills with your cosiest coat and a flask of boozy hot chocolate. We think the best views are from Alexandra Palace, Primrose Hill, and Parliament Hill or Hampstead Heath.

Watch from your apartment

Of course, there’s no view in town that can compete with HD cameras on helicopters. So, pop a bottle of bubbly, snuggle on the sofa or even have a little soirée of your own – just don’t forget to turn on BBC One at five to midnight.

Cool and quirky New Year’s Eves

If you’re staying at one of our City aparthotels…

Party like it’s 1399 at the Ivory Vaults, where you’ll enjoy a six-course Medieval banquet. Order a mead or two from your serving wench as you watch knights, jesters, dancers and acrobats perform in your honour. You’re only a short stumble from one of our short stay apartments on Fenchurch Street.

If you’re staying at Native Bankside…

Party with RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Raja at the gorgeous LaLiT Ballroom for the party of the decade. Expect an utterly debauched “eleganza extravaganza”, with great music, bubbly and a four-course Pan-Indian dinner. Here you’re only an 18 minute walk back to bed at our hotel near Southbank, Native Bankside.

The City is delightfully contradictory. It’s where old meets new, formal meets quirky and quintessential Britishness meets the global economy. This city hotspot at The Ned boasts no fewer than ten restaurants. Our favourite brunch here is at Millie’s Lounge – particularly the ham hock hash with a luscious Clarence Court egg on top – but any of the eateries here will have you feeling deservedly spoilt.

The Ritz

Breakfast at the Ritz is just as decadent as its famous afternoon tea. It’s served in the hotel’s opulent Michelin-starred restaurant, with an indulgent Continental buffet, cooked specialities to order and even a spot of caviar, if you really want to get into a special someone’s good books.

The Wolseley

Breakfast at the Wolseley is such an institution that A.A. Gill wrote a book about it. Surrounded by spectacular Art Deco design, you’ll enjoy exquisite Viennoiserie, smoked kippers, devilled kidneys and a fine selection of Austrian coffees.

Mayfair’s quirkiest restaurant, Sketch, takes brunch to another level. Served in The Glade, its ‘evergreen enchanted forest’, treat yourself to the French Toast Suzette and poached tempura eggs.

This fabled New York bakery’s only London outpost is most famous for its Cronut®, but breakfast in its little flowered conservatory is the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion. We like to start with a spicy chorizo croissant, followed by a pistachio and rose bostock.

Rail House

Rail House takes brunch very seriously, with quirky takes on classic dishes – their signature Burgerdict, to name just one – as well as healthy and delicious items for the more calorie-conscious mama. Don’t miss the house-blended juices in particular.

What better way to mark the day than by shopping and brunching at the Queen’s favourite department store? Breakfast at Fortnum & Mason is an elegant affair, with a variety of rarebits, indulgent duck egg dishes, and French toast with roasted plums for those with a sweet tooth.

Why not make a weekend of it and book a stay in one of our holiday apartments in London.

Top 5 places to feel inspired in London

If you are a horticulturist, or aspire to be, you can easily garner new ideas from seeing how plants of more than two thousand species are laid out to form what looks like a rainforest beneath the large glass roof. They do say plants are good for the office!

Max Colson

Libreria

After Rohan Silva quit as an entrepreneurial advisor to Downing Street in 2013, he opened this bookshop in East London. This attraction encompasses everything that makes a bookshop a bookshop, free of the distractions of loud coffee machines and Wi-Fi induced noises.

Here, books are arranged in suggestive themes rather than standard categories, allowing your trail of thought to run into many unexpected places. Come here to escape.

Nearest Native place: Native Fenchurch Street 0.8 miles.

Iwan Baan

Modern Society

This boutique in Shoreditch flung open its doors in 2015 and specialises in stocking luxury goods, including clothes from such brands as RE/DONE, Rejina Pyo and Alighieri. Modern Society has even launched its own clothing label and you can buy in the store. However, the building also houses a chic cafe where you can sip hot and cold beverages while admiring one of London’s coolest concept stores. It’s also a great place to stop for brunch.

Nearest Native place: Native Fenchurch Street 0.9 miles.

Cartoon Museum

This Bloomsbury museum is surely among the most unjustly hidden places in London. It includes British cartoons and comic art from various periods, right back to the eighteenth century.

Not only can you browse the three main galleries but you should also keep an eye on the line up of events and workshops, so you experience something new every time.

Nearest Native place: Native Mayfair.

Sam Jacob Studio

Tate Modern London

If your creative tastes lean towards visual art of a contemporary slant, you could regularly find new sources of inspiration in the Tate Modern, which is among the most creative places in London.

The Tate recently opened a Switch House extension where you can check out solo displays from female artists and take to a viewing platform allowing panoramic views of the city. The Tate is in Southwark’s Bankside area, in what was the building of Bankside Power Station.

Nearest Native place: Native Bankside 0.3 miles.

So there you have it, don’t settle for working from home or in one of those mundane co-working spaces. Get out there and try somewhere new!
